Mudslide on Highway 150

Hwy 150

Moonrise

The Moonrise

The destructive power of water amazes me. Santa Paula Creek stripped 10 feet of topsoil and thousands of trees out of the ground where it then washed them into the ocean. The trail is gone, it was either washed away or it is covered in mud and rocks. The hike was extended due to Highway 150 being closed. The creek washed away the banks of the hill that the road sits on. Giant sinkholes under the road caused slabs of asphault to crack and water pours into the middle of the road in a couple of places There were a lot of slides that uprooted trees, rocks and mud washing debris over the highway. Caltrans waved us through the residents only portion of the road and allowed us to walk on the crumbling remains of Hwy 150. They also warned us about walking on the cliff side of the road, you will fall in. That being said I can't wait to go back!
